Q&A session about NDE Acceleration Scheme

There is a lot of interest in the Network Digital Heritage Acceleration Scheme. With this scheme, you can apply for financial support for implementing Linked Open Data, so that your digital collections are usable for third parties. At the same time, we notice that there are many questions about this scheme and the working method. For this reason, we are organizing a question-and-answer session on Wednesday, September 25 at 10:00. This will be an online session lasting a maximum of 60 minutes. During this session, we will explain this scheme and will extensively address questions. We hope to help participants with the application. We are not doing this alone. We will be assisted in this session by Rowan Huiskes, heritage coach for the province of South Holland and senior advisor on digitization at Heritage House South Holland. 

Everyone is welcome at this session, whether it concerns a (possible) application related to Atlantis or another collection management system.

What is the NDE Acceleration Scheme?

Network Digital Heritage offers an acceleration scheme to financially support heritage organizations in transitioning to Linked Open Data according to the guidelines of the Network Digital Heritage. Support is available for upgrading the existing collection management system or transitioning to an NDE-Compatible collection management system. 

Atlantis can be fully configured to be NDE-compatible and is eligible for this Acceleration Scheme. Both existing Atlantis users and potential new users can apply for this scheme. For each individual application, an amount of up to €15,000 is available as a one-time payment. By applying NDE-Compatible, various functions are added that relate to using and publishing Linked Open Data, with the ultimate goal of exchanging collections based on standards. Organizations that apply NDE-Compatible, for example, place public datasets in the Dataset Register. This is a collection portal where data reusers can search, find, and apply datasets. Other components of NDE-Compatible include IIIF, linking with the NDE Term Network, and Persistent Identifiers.

Newsletter Atlantis User Group

The board of the Atlantis User Group sent a newsletter to the users of Atlantis on September 5. Below is a summary of this message: 

Purpose of the Atlantis User Group 

The Atlantis user group is an association formed from users of Atlantis software products. The purpose of the user group and user consultation is to achieve optimal communication between the user and the developer to ensure that Atlantis software continues to meet practical needs in the future.

Board members wanted Two current board members, Bert Finke and Esther Fidder, are stepping down. The group is looking for at least two new members to contribute to the future direction and improvements of the group. 

New online collaboration platform via Jira

The former platform, Pleio, will be replaced by Jira. This platform will serve as a place for users to ask each other for advice, share experiences, and post announcements and agenda items.

Establishment of Foundation Continuity of Services on Atlantis

This new foundation has been established to ensure the continuity of services in the event that DEVENTit is no longer able to provide services related to Atlantis. 

Save the date: Atlantis User Consultation on Tuesday, November 19, 2024 

The next consultation will take place on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, from 10:00 to 12:30, focusing on Atlantis 7. Users of Atlantis are encouraged to note this in their calendars and to submit any agenda items. It is already possible to register for the user consultation by emailing atlantisgebruikers@deventit.nl. Please indicate whether participation is digital or physical. The location is not yet known, but it will be somewhere central in the Netherlands. 

Knowledge sessions Audiovisual archive and the GDPR from KVAN

KVAN, in collaboration with AVA_Net, is organizing two free online knowledge sessions about GDPR within the heritage sector, focused on audiovisual collections. It can be challenging to determine whether certain photos or videos can be shared online, considering copyright and privacy. 

To help you with these dilemmas, KVAN and AVA_Net are working together to develop a knowledge document. During two knowledge sessions, they will review the draft theoretical introduction and the provided practical examples to create a practically useful knowledge base for the field. This ‘Knowledge Document Audiovisual’ will ultimately be presented online and serve as a reference work and knowledge base for colleagues, which can be regularly updated.

Register before October 1 for the online knowledge sessions on Mondays, October 28 and November 25, both from 14:00 to 16:00. Good to know: November 25 is a follow-up to October 28. It is advisable to participate in both sessions. 

KVAN unites professionals and institutions in the archive sector. Together, they represent the interests of the Dutch archival community, stimulate and support collaboration in the sector, and promote the expertise of archive professionals.

AVA_Net is the (knowledge) network for audiovisual collection holders in the Netherlands and everyone interested in this heritage, aiming to strengthen the position of AV heritage in the Netherlands.

Persistent identifiers from ARK

A Persistent Identifier (PID) is a unique identification code for a digital object that is registered at an agreed location. It remains guaranteed to work, even if the web address of an organization changes. This ensures that the reference to a digital object (a scan, audiovisual file, metadata record, etc.) always remains functional, even if the storage location or web address of the digital object changes. 

In addition to the Handle service from Surfsara, it is also possible to implement ARK with Atlantis. This means that users of Atlantis have the choice between these two forms of PIDs. When PID is implemented for a new Atlantis user, this choice is presented. Although the working methods of Surfsara and ARK are similar, Surfsara charges a separate subscription, while ARK can be used for free. Therefore, existing Atlantis users who use handles are offered the option to switch to ARK. In this case, the handles will be replaced with ARKs. Of course, the old handles will still work and redirect to the object.

Call for digitization of heritage from Mondriaan Fund 

In our previous newsletter, we wrote about the open call for Digitization of Heritage from the Mondriaan Fund. They held an online information meeting. With this item, we would like to provide feedback on what was discussed during that session. 

With the open call for Digitization of Heritage, the Mondriaan Fund aims to contribute to the digitization of collections or the improvement of data quality of digital heritage collections. For museums, archives, and other collection-holding heritage institutions with a public function. For the digitization of or improvement of the data quality of (digital) heritage collections, so that they can be made accessible to the public. A development contribution can also be requested for drafting a plan to digitize heritage collection(s).

The amount of the contribution is determined per application. The Mondriaan Fund can grant a contribution of up to 70% of the variable project costs. The maximum contribution for a development contribution is €15,000.

A condition for obtaining this contribution is that applicants have or are developing a policy that aligns with the National Strategy for Digital Heritage, in other words, NDE Compatible. How do you demonstrate through the application that you are working NDE Compatible?

• By stating in the plan that you have or are still developing a policy. 
• Formulating an information plan to sustainably preserve and better present digital collections. This can be submitted both at the start of the project and at the final accountability.
• Sign the Manifesto Network Digitization Heritage.

The deadline for submitting an application is October 3, 2024, before 16:00. Applications for a subsidy contribution can be made through the online application system of the Mondriaan Fund.

Join a group training and learn more about working with Atlantis

New online group trainings are scheduled. These are online trainings where Atlantis users from different organizations are trained together. Such a training starts at 09:30 and lasts until approximately 12:30. Because multiple participants are trained at the same time, there is a low participation fee associated with this training. Did you know that our trainings are rated an average of 9.3! 

On Tuesday, September 24 upcoming, a basic training is scheduled. A basic training is specifically tailored for new Atlantis users or users who need to refresh their basic knowledge. After this training, a user will be able to work independently with Atlantis.

On Tuesday, September 17 upcoming, an advanced course is scheduled on the topic ‘Working with Atlantis Archive Management’. This group training will focus on the archive management module and cover relevant components to optimally use this module.
