Linking Atlantis with AI

Atlantis has been expanded with the ability to link with external AI tools. This expansion will be available to everyone in the next quarterly release of Atlantis, which is expected within a few weeks. As a pilot project, a link with Transkribus has been successfully completed on behalf of Liberas from Ghent. Thanks to this link, handwritten sources in Atlantis can be automatically provided with OCR. Additionally, an enhancement has been made to the image viewer of Atlantis, allowing this OCR to be presented over the handwritten source. The end user can set how this text is displayed, and hit-highlighting is applied. 

Within the management environment of Atlantis, the sources eligible for automatic transcription are placed in a workset. This workset can then be sent to Transkribus along with the chosen AI model. Transkribus then returns the OCR, which is almost immediately available for publication.

Thanks to the NDE Acceleration Scheme, it is possible to receive financial support and assistance in applying Linked Open Data. The Digital Heritage Network has established guidelines that help in the practical application of Linked Open Data, which we call ‘NDE Compatible’. Atlantis Collection Management can be fully set up as NDE Compatible. This allows collections to be offered in a usable way, enabling external parties to reuse the data. 

The Digital Heritage Network has held a webinar about this project and how to make the collection management system suitable for publishing Linked Open Data. There is also an explanation of the application process for financial support.

Offering datasets via the Dataset Register

The end result of a fully NDE Compatible setup is that datasets are offered via the Dataset Register. The Dataset Register is the result of collaboration within the Digital Heritage Network and is managed and maintained by the National Archive. This effectively provides a search engine for parties looking to reuse heritage collections, for example, to set up a heritage platform where data from various parties comes together. 

Hunebedcentrum from Borger is one of the Atlantis users who participated in the NDE Acceleration Scheme. Thanks to a link, the datasets are automatically offered to the Dataset Register. Datasets from Hunebedcentrum are thus visible not only on their own publication environment (https://collectie.hunebedcentrum.eu/opendata.php) but also at the Dataset Register.

Call for digitization of heritage from the Mondriaan Fund

If your institution’s collection has not yet been digitized, or if you have a plan to further digitize your heritage collection, consider improving the quality of the digital heritage collections. Perhaps the open call for Digitization of Heritage offers a solution. You can submit an application for a contribution to your digitization project until October 3, 2024. A maximum of 70% of the variable project costs can be reimbursed, with a maximum contribution of EUR 15,000. 

On Tuesday, September 3 at 4:00 PM, the Mondriaan Fund will hold an online information session to explain this scheme. More information about this scheme and registration for the information session can be found via the buttons below. 

Join a group training and learn more about working with Atlantis

New online group trainings are scheduled. These are online trainings where Atlantis users from different organizations are trained together. Such a training starts at 09:30 and lasts until approximately 12:30. Since multiple participants are trained at the same time, there is a low participation fee associated with this training. Did you know that our trainings are rated an average of 9.3?

On Tuesday, September 24, a basic training is scheduled. A basic training is specifically tailored for new Atlantis users or users who need to refresh their basic knowledge. After this training, a user will be able to work independently with Atlantis.

On Tuesday, September 17, an advanced course is scheduled on the topic ‘Working with Atlantis Archive Management’. This group training focuses on the archive management module and covers relevant components to optimally use this module.
