Atlantis for National Heritage Register Road Vehicles

Fehac – Federation of Historical Automobile and Motorcycle Clubs – is one of the umbrella organizations behind the Mobile Collection Netherlands. Fehac has chosen Atlantis as the platform for the new Heritage Register Road. With Atlantis, this platform will be fully set up in accordance with the guidelines of the Digital Heritage Network and will therefore use and publish Linked Open Data. 

The Mobile Collection Netherlands foundation maintains a register for all mobile heritage, including road vehicles, ships, airplanes, and trains. This overarching register, the National Register of Mobile Heritage, was established at the request of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and provides insight into the scope of the mobile collection of the Netherlands. This National Register is intended to facilitate better supporting policies. 

The goal of the Heritage Register Road is to create a catalog that provides a good overview of the total collection of ‘heritage of the road’: All historical vehicles older than 30 years that meet the criteria. We can then speak of a digital museum of mobile heritage of the road. 

Fehac will give various parties such as car clubs, road vehicle-related museums, and documentation centers the opportunity to supplement data about the vehicles within this register. For example, a car club with various members who own classic vehicles can access only their own vehicles to provide them with photos and additional information. Additionally, these parties will also be offered the opportunity to record related information within this platform, such as (club) photos, parts, manuals, and documentation. Such a participant will be given the option to create their own public environment to make this information visible to members and/or the general public. 

Link with Transkribus

Applying AI to make heritage more accessible. In a recent project, Atlantis was linked to Transkribus to automatically provide handwritten sources with OCR. Commissioned by Liberas Gent. Our image viewer has been expanded with the ability to overlay the digital text on the handwritten text. For the (end) user, it is customizable how this text is presented thanks to a color picker and sliders. The text is fully searchable and there is hit-highlighting. 

Atlantis has been expanded with the ability to connect external AI tools to enrich collections. This can be used for various applications. If you want to use the link with Transkribus, or if there are requests for other links with AI, let us know.

 

Podcast Paulus and de Nijs on the Road: DAF Museum

The DAF Museum in Eindhoven wants to make its digital heritage accessible to a larger audience and connect its own collection with that of other heritage organizations. For this, they have called on the NDE project Accelerate to acquire a new collection information system. How this process went, you will hear from Ad Bakker, volunteer manager of the DAF collection, and Annette Gaalman, NDE Implementation Coordinator, in the latest podcast edition of ‘Paulus and de Nijs on the road through digital heritage’.
DAF Museum has chosen Atlantis to make the collections digitally accessible in accordance with the guidelines of the Digital Heritage Network. This episode lasts about 15 minutes.

War sources from Municipality of Peel and Maas available as Linked Open Data

For the municipality of Peel and Maas, Linked Open Data has been implemented. As the first pilot project, war-related archives have been published as Linked Open Data: https://pem.hosting.deventit.net/opendata.php.
The War Sources Network makes use of this Linked Data set, making these archival pieces visible within the Network. The sources utilize the WWII thesaurus from Niod via the NDE Term Network. Additionally, IIIF is applied and there are Persistent Identifiers.

New online group training sessions planned

New online group training sessions are planned. These are online trainings where Atlantis users from different organizations are trained together. Such a training starts at 09:30 and lasts until approximately 12:30. Since multiple participants are trained simultaneously, a low participation fee is associated with this training. Did you know that our trainings are rated an average of 9.3?

On Tuesday, September 24, a basic training session is scheduled. A basic training is specifically tailored for new Atlantis users or users who need to refresh their basic knowledge. After this training, a user will be able to work independently with Atlantis.

On Tuesday, September 17, an advanced course is scheduled on the topic ‘Working with Atlantis Archive Management’. This group training will focus on the archive management module and cover relevant components to optimally use this module.
